Digital Communication
Designs which create design
As software and digital information become pervasive in our world, their external and internal architectures become more and more visible to us, affecting us, mentally and emotionally, just as physical architectures do. Production methods have become so rich on one hand and so available on the other that the physical world is starting to look like the digital world, instead of drawing and designing every detail, architects and designers let the computer generate parts of their design. Even as these digital architectures evolve, we can still see at their core the same basic principles, those of generation and manipulation of Information. Our endeavor will be to investigate and understand these basic principles, how they evolve and how they converge. Not only will this enable us, as designers, to more easily understand and react to the evolving digital world around us, it will also permit us to create architectures and designs which better reflect “this ever-changing world in which we live in” - architectures and designs which are dynamic, “live” and interconnected, constantly generated, constantly generating. Designs which create design.
Brief
Telecommunications are the technologies which underpin fixed and mobile networks and as such, provide the physical and emotional infrastructure of our emerging networked society. The aim of this course is to develop a better understanding of how telecommunication technologies become more and more embodied in our physical world. These technologies infuse us with massive amounts of digital information. So our first goal will be to equip you with new methods of analysis, which will help you uncover the hidden informational architectures around you. We believe in learning by making. Therefore, our second goal will be to challenge you with hands-on experience in contributing to the creation of new and unique informational architectures, whether in fixed, portable, or mobile settings. By the end of this course we will expect you to create your own dynamic design, fed by live information
Process
During this course we expect you to complete the following process:
Phase 1: Learn New Ways to Analyze
Phase 2: Interact with Information
Phase 3: Design an Informational Architecture
Phase 4: Iterate, Refine, Enhance
Phase 5: Build and Present a live prototype
At the end of the course you will be able to
* demonstrate a knowledge of the technologies
* show that you have understood the design constraints of the technology
* analyse information architectures
* design a system that uses the technology inventively
* build a prototype
* provide visualization & online documentation
* show you can work in a team
